Kerry Hill

Panda-like sheep from Powys

Native Breed

Tasting notes:
sweet, herbal, natural

Why this breed

This distinctive sheep breed hails from the small town of Kerry in mid-Wales. With its pert ears and panda-like markings, the breed is instantly recognisable. The rolling landscape, valleys, and exposed hill tops make the Kerry Hill's Montgomeryshire home natural sheep country, and the breed was first recorded in the early 19th century. Today, the Kerry Hill Breed Society is dedicated to reviving the fortunes of these stocky sheep, and it was removed from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist in 2006. Numbers are rising as small holders are drawn to its striking appearance, and home cooks discover the lean and flavoursome quality of the lamb.
